Indian Railways plans AI surveillance, drone monitoring and expanded CCTV network for passenger safety

Indian Railways is preparing for a major technological revamp aimed at driving safety upgrades across its network. It plans to implement the use of AI-powered surveillance, drones and CCTV cameras to improve passenger safety and strengthen security at stations and inside trains. Reports suggest the move comes in response to recent security concerns and incidents involving anti-social elements on railway premises.

Beyond the deployment of smart monitoring systems, the Railways is also urging passengers to remain alert during travel and immediately report suspicious activity through the railway helpline. These safety measures will focus on faster intelligence gathering, better coordination and stronger cybersecurity systems across the country.

The deployment of intelligence-based monitoring and active drone surveillance will help authorities track suspicious movement and improve real-time monitoring across stations and railway routes. CCTV coverage will also be expanded further across the railway network. These additions and security reviews were discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Rail Bhawan. Officials from different railway zones participated in the discussion on strengthening security measures nationwide.

Focus on cybersecurity and smart monitoring

Apart from physical surveillance, the Railways is also working on stronger cybersecurity systems and improved coordination between the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP).

Seamless information sharing between departments is expected to help authorities respond more quickly to security threats. The Railways said the technology-driven monitoring system will continue to expand in phases as part of a broader security upgrade plan.

The Railways also stressed that passengers will play an integral role in ensuring safer travel. Travellers have been advised to immediately report unattended items, suspicious behaviour or unusual activity at stations and inside trains through helpline number 139. Officials said the growing involvement of anti-social elements has increased the need for preventive monitoring, faster intelligence-sharing and advanced surveillance systems across the railway network.
