India bags 5 golds at International Physics Olympiad 2026, finishes joint first
India's young physicists delivered one of the country's strongest-ever performances at the 56th International Physics Olympiad in Colombia, winning gold medals for all five team members. The result placed India among six joint toppers and underscored the country's growing strength in international science competitions for school students.

India has finished among the world's best-performing nations at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) after every member of its five-student contingent returned home with a gold medal, placing the country in a six-way tie for the top position at one of the most prestigious global science competitions for school students.
Hosted this year in Bucaramanga, Colombia, the Olympiad brought together 381 participants from 87 countries, all competing in a demanding contest designed to test advanced understanding of physics through theoretical analysis and experimental problem-solving. India's flawless medal tally placed it alongside Russia, China, Kazakhstan, South Korea and Taiwan at the summit of the final standings.
The Indian students who secured gold medals are Kansisk Jain from Pune, Riddhesh Anant Bendale from Indore, Rishit Garg from Delhi, Shresth Suraiya from Mumbai and Svait Joshi from Ahmedabad. Their collective performance marks one of India's most successful outings at the competition and adds to the country's growing record in international science Olympiads.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X, congratulation the students for their achievement. He said, "An outstanding performance by our youngsters!".
Along with the PM, the Principal Scientific Adviser also congratulated the team and applauded their efforts make India proud.
Reaching the international stage required months of rigorous preparation before the students travelled to Colombia. Their training programme combined advanced classroom instruction with intensive laboratory work and repeated problem-solving sessions aimed at sharpening both conceptual understanding and practical skills.
The team was mentored by Professor Anwesh Mazumdar of HBCSE-TIFR and Dr Leena Joshi, while Professor Ananda Dasgupta of IISER Kolkata and Nisha Kelkar served as scientific observers. Their guidance formed an important part of India's preparation for the competition.
The International Physics Olympiad is widely regarded as one of the toughest academic contests for high school students. Participants face challenging examinations that demand not only a strong grasp of physics but also the ability to apply scientific principles under time pressure through analytical reasoning and experimentation.
India's clean sweep reflects the country's continued progress in nurturing young scientific talent capable of competing at the highest international level. Sharing the top rank with countries that have long-established traditions of excellence in physics education is likely to strengthen confidence in India's school-level science training ecosystem.
