Google turns Images into a Pinterest-like discovery hub with AI image generation
Google revamps Google Images with AI image generation and a personalised discovery experience.

Google Images has undergone a comprehensive makeover, transforming the platform into a dynamic, browsable gallery of images from across the web. Google is also introducing a new way for users to generate AI images directly within Search as it celebrates 25 years of Google Images.
With the redesign, Google Images is evolving into a destination for discovery and inspiration, rather than serving solely as a search tool. The revamp is aimed at increasing the time users spend across Google's platforms, potentially boosting engagement and advertising revenue. The updated experience also encourages users to stay within Google's ecosystem to discover or create images, instead of turning to third-party AI services such as ChatGPT.
The redesigned interface introduces a "For You" section that surfaces personalised image recommendations based on users' interests and browsing activity. It also offers a smoother, continuously scrollable experience with real-time updates, making image discovery more seamless. The redesign will roll out over the coming weeks on desktop in the United States in English. Users will need to be signed in to a Google Account to access the new experience.
As users browse, they can save images and ideas to Collections, which appear as tabs above the main image gallery for easy access. For instance, users can create themed collections for vacation outfit ideas, travel inspiration, or reading nook designs, allowing them to revisit and build on those ideas later.
AI image generation comes to Search
Google is also bringing AI image generation directly into Search. According to the company, the feature is best suited for creating images that do not already exist online. Powered by Google's latest Nano Banana model, it allows users to turn a text prompt into a custom image directly from AI Overviews within Search.
The new capabilities are also designed to help users reimagine spaces, visualise ideas, and experiment with creative concepts. Google said the AI Overviews image generation feature will begin rolling out over the coming weeks in all regions where image generation is currently supported.
