Google maps to order food for you soon with new Gemini integration under development

A new Gemini integration in Google Maps could soon let users order food directly from their favourite restaurants. Google is reportedly developing a new Gemini-powered food ordering feature that would allow users to search for meals using natural language and place orders seamlessly through the app.

While Google has not officially announced the feature, it has reportedly been spotted in the latest Android beta version of Google Maps.

The feature was uncovered during an APK teardown of Google Maps version 26.27.00.941319029 for Android. Developers discovered code strings reading "Ask Maps to order food" and "Say what you are craving," suggesting that Maps could eventually order food on a user's behalf, even while they are on the go.

The upcoming feature appears to be an extension of Ask Maps, Google's AI-powered search tool introduced earlier this year. Ask Maps already allows users to ask detailed questions, such as where they can find restaurants serving a specific type of cuisine. The latest discovery suggests Google is preparing to take the feature a step further by enabling it to complete food orders directly from within the app.

Several aspects of the feature remain unclear. Google has yet to confirm which restaurant partners or food ordering platforms will support it, whether it will offer both delivery and pickup or be limited to pickup, and whether it will be available across all Android devices. Reports suggest that users will still need to approve payments before an order is placed, adding an extra layer of protection against unauthorised purchases.

The feature aligns with Google's broader vision of transforming Gemini into an AI assistant capable of completing real-world tasks rather than simply answering questions. Since March, the company has been expanding its AI-powered experiences with features like Ask Maps, which provides personalised recommendations and helps users plan trips through natural conversations. A food ordering capability would take that a step further by enabling Gemini to perform actions directly within supported apps.

For now, the feature remains under development, and users will have to wait for an official announcement from Google before it is rolled out.
