Former Samsung executive reveals why the RAM crisis may ease earlier than expected
A former Samsung executive believes China’s aggressive RAM production push and a possible slowdown in the AI boom could ease the ongoing memory crisis sooner than expected.

A report from Seoul Economic Daily, quoting Kyung Kye-hyun — who headed Samsung’s semiconductor business until a couple of years ago — revealed that “Chinese companies are aggressively expanding their production capacity for making RAM.”
He further added, “There is a possibility that the market will change starting from the second half of next year or the first half of 2028, when memory supply surges.”
Predictions Regarding the AI Boom
The former Samsung executive also noted that there is a possibility that the “return on investment from Big Tech” could decline relative to the massive capital being poured into AI. This, in turn, could weaken the ongoing AI boom. Combined with China’s increasing RAM production, this may lead to a faster-than-expected correction in the balance between supply and demand.
Prominent chipmakers such as Samsung have already indicated a gloomier outlook for the memory market. According to their projections, the crisis could last at least until 2028 and may even extend to 2030. As a result, the possibility of a recovery beginning as early as next year could come as a surprising development for the industry.
Beyond the insights shared by the former Samsung executive, disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz are also emerging as a concern for the supply of certain vital chemicals used in memory production. According to reports from The Elec, these issues could further impact prices through an Iran-linked supply shock.
The report highlights that hydrofluoric acid — extensively used in the etching and cleaning processes involved in RAM production — is witnessing a price increase. This is largely because its core ingredient, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, has become significantly more expensive, with prices reportedly surging by 40% since the beginning of 2026. As major tech companies begin stockpiling these supplies, RAM prices could see a further rise in the coming months.
