Forget Find My: Apple may be building an iPhone that locks itself the moment it’s stolen

Apple is reportedly working on a new anti-theft feature for iPhones that could instantly lock a device if it detects it has been snatched from a user’s hand. The system may combine motion sensors, location awareness and Apple Watch proximity to stop thieves before they can access personal data.

For years, smartphone theft has followed a frustratingly simple formula: grab the phone while it is unlocked, run away quickly and hope the owner cannot react in time. Now, Apple may finally be preparing to fight back with an iPhone feature that sounds straight out of a spy thriller.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple is actively developing a new anti-theft system that could automatically lock an iPhone the moment it suspects the device has been physically snatched from its owner’s hand. Think of it as your iPhone instantly panicking on your behalf.

The idea is not entirely new. Google already introduced a similar Theft Detection Lock feature for Android devices. But Apple now appears ready to bring its own version to iPhones, potentially with a deeper integration into the company’s existing ecosystem.

Apple already offers a long list of security protections, including Find My, Activation Lock and Stolen Device Protection. These features are useful if a phone is lost or stolen later. The problem is what happens in the crucial first few seconds after a theft.

If a thief grabs an unlocked iPhone directly from a user’s hand, many of those protections become far less effective because the device is already open and accessible. In some cases, criminals can quickly change passwords, disable tracking tools or gain access to banking apps before the owner even realises what has happened.

Apple attempted to address part of this issue with Stolen Device Protection in iOS 17.3, which added security delays when an iPhone is away from familiar locations like home or work. But that still may not be enough if the screen is already active during the theft.

That is where the new feature could step in.

According to code reportedly uncovered by 9to5Mac, the upcoming system would use a combination of hardware signals to decide whether an iPhone has been snatched in real time.

Sensors, smartwatches and suspicious movement

One of the key tools behind the feature is expected to be the iPhone’s accelerometer, which can detect sudden or unusual motion patterns consistent with a phone being yanked away.

Apple may also use proximity data from a paired Apple Watch to help determine whether the device is still near its rightful owner. If the iPhone suddenly moves away from the watch at high speed, the system could interpret that as a potential theft.

The software is also expected to factor in trusted locations and familiar Wi-Fi networks. So if your phone is at home, in the office or connected to known networks, the response may be less aggressive. But if a suspicious snatching motion happens in an unfamiliar location, the iPhone could immediately lock down sensitive information.

That reportedly includes restricting access to apps, settings and payment data almost instantly.

Apple has not officially confirmed the feature or announced a release date. However, with Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026) expected next month, there is speculation the company could unveil the feature alongside new versions of iOS, macOS and iPadOS.

If it arrives, the feature could turn the iPhone into something thieves may finally hate stealing.
