Claude for Teachers: Here's everything new Anthropic's AI assistant brings to educators

Anthropic has unveiled Claude for Teachers, a new version of its AI assistant designed specifically for K-12 educators in the US. The offering provides teachers with free access to premium Claude capabilities, along with a suite of teaching-focused AI tools, curriculum support, and integrations with several education platforms.

According to Anthropic, the initiative is designed to help teachers spend less time on administrative and planning tasks while improving lesson preparation, classroom differentiation, and instructional planning.

According to an official blog detailing the features of Claude for Teachers, educators will be able to create new lesson plans, update existing files on their desktop using Claude Cowork, and draw on Learning Commons for state standards and instructional materials from Illustrative Mathematics and OpenSciEd.

Since the model has been built specifically for teachers, Anthropic has also introduced an AI fluency course in partnership with Teach For America, along with a Train the Trainer module co-created with the American Federation of Teachers. These resources are intended to help educators better understand the model and use it responsibly with students in mind.

Safe with student data

Since the platform is expected to process student data, Anthropic has introduced a series of safeguards to protect user privacy. Training on customer data is turned off by default, meaning student data is not used to train Claude's models. Educator accounts also include FERPA-aligned terms and a defined service-level agreement (SLA) for deleting conversations containing student data. Complementing these features, the platform has been built to meet the student privacy standards established by the American Federation of Teachers.

Claude for Teachers also integrates with several third-party education platforms to streamline classroom workflows. Teachers can use ASSISTments to generate standards-aligned math questions, Brisk Teaching to create lessons, quizzes, and classroom activities, and Canva Education to turn ideas into classroom-ready designs. Diffit helps adapt instructional content to different reading levels, while Eedi supports diagnostic math assessments. The platform also works with MagicSchool for generating instructional materials, Snorkl for classroom insights, TeachFX for instructional feedback, and Coteach for creating curriculum-based math diagrams and visual learning aids. Together, these integrations enable educators to create, refine, and deliver teaching resources without switching between multiple applications.

Built for higher education

Anthropic has also expanded Claude's capabilities for higher education. While synthesising sources for a literature review or working through complex problems, Claude is designed to engage with the nuances of a topic rather than oversimplifying it. Instead of merely following instructions, it can push back, ask follow-up questions, and help students develop stronger arguments supported by technical insights.

Highlighting its focus on privacy and accessibility in higher education, Anthropic said it partners with educational institutions to make AI-enhanced learning accessible to students regardless of their background. The company says it only uses data for model training with user permission and maintains security standards that meet institutional compliance requirements. The platform also integrates with Canvas, Wiley, and Panopto to provide a more seamless and compliant learning experience for higher education institutions.

Verified K-12 educators in the US can sign up for Claude for Teachers free until June 30, 2027, and receive one year of premium access after completing the verification process.
