Apple Watch and AirPods Pro get major health upgrades in India

Apple is expanding its health ambitions in India with two major new features for Apple Watch and AirPods Pro users. From sleep apnoea detection to at-home hearing tests, the company is turning everyday gadgets into personal health assistants that quietly monitor your wellbeing while you go about your routine.

For years, smartwatches and wireless earbuds have mostly been about convenience. They tracked your steps, played your playlists, showed notifications and occasionally nudged you to stand up after sitting too long. But now, Apple wants these devices to do something much more meaningful: help users catch serious health issues before they become bigger problems.

Starting this week in India, Apple is rolling out two major health-focused features that could change how many people think about wearable technology. Your Apple Watch may soon be able to spot signs of sleep apnoea, while your AirPods Pro can now double up as a hearing test device.

And no, you do not need to visit a clinic to try either of them.

Your Apple Watch may now know when you are not breathing properly at night

Sleep apnoea is one of those conditions many people have heard about but rarely take seriously until it becomes severe. It causes breathing to repeatedly stop and restart during sleep, often without the person even noticing.

The problem is bigger than it sounds. Apple says more than one billion people globally may be affected, and many remain undiagnosed for years. Left untreated, sleep apnoea can increase the risk of hypertension, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

That is where the new Apple Watch feature steps in.

Using the watch’s accelerometer, Apple analyses tiny wrist movements linked to irregular breathing patterns during sleep. Instead of giving instant alerts after one bad night, the system studies breathing disturbance data over a 30-day period. If it notices repeated signs associated with moderate to severe sleep apnoea, users receive a notification suggesting they seek medical advice.

The Health app is becoming your personal sleep diary

Apple is also trying to make the information less intimidating and more useful.

Inside the Health app, users can now track breathing disturbance trends across one-month, six-month and one-year periods. There is also an option to generate a downloadable PDF report that can be shared directly with doctors or sleep specialists.

The app includes educational resources explaining what sleep apnoea is, how it affects the body and why treatment matters.

Apple says the underlying detection algorithm was built using machine learning and validated through clinical-grade sleep apnoea studies. According to the company, every participant identified during validation had at least mild sleep apnoea.

AirPods Pro are now doing more than just cancelling noise

Meanwhile, Apple is giving its AirPods Pro a surprisingly medical twist.

The company has introduced a new hearing test feature that lets users check their hearing levels from home in around five minutes. The process uses a standard clinical method called pure-tone audiometry, which is commonly used in professional hearing tests.

All users need is a compatible iPhone or iPad and a pair of AirPods Pro 2 running the latest software.

Once the test is complete, users receive a detailed summary showing hearing loss levels in each ear, classifications and suggested next steps. The results also include an audiogram and are automatically stored inside the Health app.

Like the sleep apnoea reports, the hearing data can also be shared with healthcare professionals if needed.

Sumbul Desai said the company’s aim is to give people tools that help them understand health conditions they may not even realise they have.

And that may be the bigger story here. Apple is no longer just selling gadgets. It is quietly turning devices people already wear every day into early warning systems for their health.
