Apple brings iOS 27 to older iPhones, but its most powerful AI remains limited to newer devices: Check list

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 brought a long list of announcements, from a redesigned software experience to a significantly upgraded Siri powered by next-generation Apple Intelligence. Yet amid all the excitement, one detail could have major implications for millions of iPhone, iPad and Mac users.

While Apple is extending iOS 27 support to devices dating back several generations, not everyone will receive the same artificial intelligence experience. The company has confirmed that its most advanced on-device AI model, which powers some of the latest Apple Intelligence features and Siri improvements, will require considerably more powerful hardware than previous AI offerings.

In practical terms, that means many users will be able to install iOS 27, but only a select group of newer Apple devices will be capable of running the company's most powerful AI system locally on the device.

The distinction marks an important shift in Apple's AI strategy. For years, software support and feature availability largely moved together. With Apple Intelligence, however, hardware capability is becoming just as important as operating system compatibility.

iOS 27: Eligible devices

The good news for Apple users is that iOS 27 will continue to support a broad range of iPhones. Devices as old as the iPhone 11 are expected to receive the latest software update, ensuring that millions of users can access the redesigned operating system, interface enhancements and many of the new features unveiled during WWDC.

This approach follows Apple's long-standing practice of supporting older hardware for several years after launch. For consumers, it means an older iPhone can continue receiving security updates, software improvements and many new capabilities without requiring an immediate upgrade.

However, the announcement also highlights a growing distinction between being able to install the latest operating system and being able to take advantage of every headline feature.

Apple's latest software strategy increasingly revolves around artificial intelligence. Features such as the upgraded Siri, smarter personal assistance tools and advanced on-device AI experiences demand far greater computing resources than traditional operating system updates.

As a result, hardware specifications are now becoming a critical factor in determining what users can actually do with the newest software.

But what about the new AI features?

This is where the story becomes more complicated.

Apple revealed that its most advanced on-device AI model has significantly higher hardware requirements than previous Apple Intelligence features. Whereas earlier Apple Intelligence functions could run on devices with 8GB of memory, the newest model requires at least 12GB.

According to Apple's requirements, the company's most powerful on-device AI model will only run on the following devices:

• iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air

• iPads powered by the M4 chip or newer with at least 12GB of memory

• Macs equipped with the M3 chip or later and 12GB or more of memory

One of the biggest surprises is the exclusion of the standard iPhone 17. Although it is among Apple's newest smartphones, it reportedly ships with 8GB of memory, falling short of the threshold needed for the advanced AI model.

The decision effectively creates a new hierarchy within Apple's ecosystem. Users with supported premium devices will benefit from faster, locally processed AI experiences, while those using older or less powerful hardware may receive similar functionality through a different route.

Apple says many of the same AI-powered features will remain available on unsupported devices through its Private Cloud Compute system. Instead of running entirely on the device, certain requests will be processed using Apple's secure cloud infrastructure.

For users, the practical difference is likely to be speed and responsiveness. On-device processing generally offers lower latency, faster responses and the ability to perform certain tasks without relying heavily on an internet connection. Cloud-based processing, while still capable, can introduce additional delays.

The move also underlines a broader trend emerging across the technology industry. As AI models become more sophisticated, companies are increasingly relying on specialised hardware and larger memory capacities to deliver the best experience.

For Apple, the strategy appears aimed at balancing innovation with privacy. Running powerful AI models directly on a device reduces the need to send personal data to remote servers, an approach the company has repeatedly highlighted as a key advantage of Apple Intelligence.

The result, however, is that iOS 27 users may find themselves in two very different camps. One group will gain access to Apple's most capable on-device AI experience, while another will rely on cloud-assisted intelligence despite running the same operating system.

In other words, when iOS 27 arrives later this year, installing the update may be the easy part. Unlocking its full AI potential could require entirely new hardware.
