Anthropic brings India-specific pricing for Claude AI, Pro plan starts at Rs 2,000

Anthropic has quietly localised its Claude subscription pricing for India, enabling customers to purchase paid plans directly in Indian rupees rather than paying in US dollars. The move removes the need for foreign currency transactions and bundles GST into the listed prices, making subscriptions more straightforward for individuals and businesses alike.

The pricing update reflects India's growing significance in the global AI market. Industry reports have suggested that India is Claude's second-largest market after the United States, making it an increasingly important region for Anthropic as competition among AI companies intensifies.

Until now, Indian users subscribing to Claude were billed in US dollars, meaning the advertised price often increased after currency conversion charges, GST and other international payment fees were added. With the new local pricing structure, users can now see the final amount payable in rupees through Claude's official website.

The entry-level paid offering, Claude Pro, now starts at Rs 2,000 per month on an annual subscription, while customers opting for monthly billing will pay Rs 2,399. Under the previous pricing model, the plan was listed at $20 per month, or around $17 per month when billed annually, before taxes and additional payment charges.

What do Claude's paid plans offer?

Claude Pro is aimed at users who need substantially higher usage limits and access to Anthropic's most capable AI models. The subscription runs on Sonnet 5 by default while also unlocking additional models, including Opus and the company's more advanced Fable 5.

Subscribers receive approximately five times the usage allowance available on the free tier, alongside features such as Research mode, unlimited Projects, Memory, web search, voice interactions and support for uploading files. The plan also includes access to Claude Code for software development, Claude Design, integrations with Microsoft 365 applications and support within Excel and PowerPoint.

Anthropic has retained its free tier for Indian users. Free accounts continue to provide access to Sonnet 5, Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5, together with web search, file uploads of up to 20 files per conversation and limited Project functionality.

For users requiring significantly higher capacity, Anthropic continues to offer Claude Max in two variants. The Max 5x plan is priced at Rs 11,999 per month, while the Max 20x tier costs Rs 23,999 each month. Previously, these plans were billed at $100 and $200 respectively, excluding taxes and currency conversion costs.

Unlike Pro, Claude Max does not introduce additional AI models. Instead, it dramatically expands usage limits while retaining the same feature set, including Projects, Claude Code, Memory, web search and Cowork. Subscribers also receive priority access during periods of high demand, longer coding sessions through Claude Code and early access to upcoming features and new model releases.

Team subscriptions also receive local pricing

Anthropic has extended the India-specific pricing to business customers through its Claude Team offering.

The Team Standard plan is now available at Rs 2,399 per user each month when billed annually, or Rs 2,999 with monthly billing. Organisations seeking higher-tier capabilities can opt for Team Premium, priced at Rs 11,999 per seat annually or Rs 14,999 on a month-to-month basis. As with individual subscriptions, all published prices include GST.

The Team subscription is designed for collaborative workplace use and includes a 200,000-token context window, API usage credits, Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Enterprise-focused features such as centralised billing, administrative controls, single sign-on and domain management are also included. Anthropic says conversations within Claude Team are not used to train its AI models by default.

The introduction of rupee billing follows a broader trend among global AI companies that are increasingly tailoring their products and pricing for India. As adoption of generative AI accelerates across consumers, developers and businesses, simplifying payments and reducing hidden costs could make premium AI subscriptions more accessible to a wider segment of Indian users while strengthening Anthropic's position in one of the world's fastest-growing AI markets.
