Carlos Alcaraz faces Wimbledon doubt as former world No 4 issues alarming assessment: 'I don’t think...'

Carlos Alcaraz may also miss out on Wimbledon after deciding to sit out of the French Open, British tennis icon Greg Rusedski feels. Alcaraz has been forced to miss out on the French Open, Madrid Open and the Italian Open due to a wrist injury.

After Alcaraz suffered the injury during the Barcelona Open, it has been rumoured that 23-year-old Alcaraz could return to action at Queen’s Club in June to prepare for Wimbledon. But former British No 1 Rusedski feels the wrist problem can keep Alcaraz out for longer.

'Don’t think Carlos is going to be back'

Rusedski dropped the bombshell while discussing Novak Djokovic's chances at the French Open on Off Court with Greg. “With Carlos out, I don’t think Carlos is going to be back for Wimbledon this year. I think, you know, that’s where Djokovic is thinking, okay, that’s where I want to peak," former world No 4 Rusedski said.

“That’s where I want to be as healthy as possible. But I’m going to try to get my reps in through Paris, maybe play a few tournaments on the grass, and then peak for Wimbledon. Never discount him.

“If Novak’s healthy and the body’s there, he can beat anybody. He’s still that good. But it kind of feels like this is like crunch time moments coming up from the next few weeks.”

Rusedski added that Alcaraz will miss Wimbledon as he would not want to take any risk soon and get into more trouble. Rusedski gave Juan Martin del Potro’s example and his wrist issues to make his case.

“We always miss Carlos, but he’s doing the right thing. Health is your wealth. He doesn’t want to be like Juan Martin Del Potro, who came back too early, too many wrist injuries, never managed to fulfill his huge potential.

“What a great player we lost there for long periods of time,” said Rusedski. “And until he’s ready, he won’t be back.”

While injury may keep Alcaraz out of Wimbledon, the Spaniard would be desperate to return as he lost the final last year to Jannik Sinner, who recently became the youngest to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 events.
