How many medals have India won at Olympics?

India started their Olympic campaign in 1900 with two medals (both silver) and have won a total of 35 medals across 24 Summer Games. The breakup of the 35 medals includes 10 Gold, 9 Silver, and 16 bronze. The Indian men's hockey team has won eight out of the 10 gold medals with Abhinav Bindra (shooting) and Neeraj Chopra (javelin throw) winning the other two.

The last gold medal in hockey, however, came at Moscow 1980 and the men's team won a bronze in the last Olympics in Tokyo.

India's first Olympic medal was won by Norman Pritchard, an Anglo-Indian athlete, at the 1900 Paris Olympics. He won two silver medals, both in athletics (200m race and 200m hurdles).

The first gold medal was won by the Indian hockey team in the 1928 Games which was held in Amsterdam. They also won the first medal (gold) for independent India at London 1948.

The first individual medal after independence was won by wrestler KD Jadhav (bronze) at Helsinki 1952.

The first Individual gold medal was won at Beijing 2008 by Bindra.

The first woman athlete to win a medal for India was weightlifter Karnam Malleswari who won bronze at the Olympics in Sydney 2000.
