Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, made headlines once again as he sported an Arsenal themed-kurta while offering prayers on the occasion of Eid-Al-Adha on Wednesday, May 27.

Mamdani's look went viral on social media with some on the internet calling it thobe, a traditional, ankle-length, loose-fitting robe worn by men in the Arab world. He joined the prayers in Bronx, New York wearing the traditional top which captured the attention of many on the Internet.

Mamdani, who was elected as the Mayor of New York late last year, is a vocal Arsenal supporter and donned their away jersey on the occasion of the festival. Arsenal recently won their first Premier League title in over two decades, much to the delight of their fans. The club is also in the final of the UEFA Champions League where they have to beat defending champions PSG to win the title.

Mamdani's message

The New York mayor took to social media to give a heart-warming message on Eid-Al-Adha.

“Together, we are working to ensure every New Yorker can afford the groceries, housing, and childcare they need,” Mamdani said in a post on social media.

“Eid Al Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden. It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger,” Mamdani added. “To extend a hand to those who need it most.”
