World Cup Day 15 wrap: Ecuador stun Germany, Ivory Coast make history, Curacao’s dream run ends

The 15th day of the FIFA World Cup 2026 produced one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far as Ecuador stunned four-time champions Germany, while Ivory Coast created history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

Germany, who had already secured qualification after winning their opening two Group E matches, suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat against Ecuador at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Ivory Coast also booked their place in the Round of 32 after beating debutants Curacao 2-0, ending the Caribbean side’s dream World Cup journey.

Ecuador create World Cup history by defeating Germany

Ecuador produced one of the biggest moments of World Cup 2026 by coming from behind to beat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the knockout rounds.

Germany made a good start after Leroy Sane scored just under two minutes into the match, putting the European giants ahead early. However, Ecuador responded quickly when Nilson Angulo scored the team’s first goal of the tournament in the ninth minute after capitalising on a mistake in midfield.

The match remained level until the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata became Ecuador’s hero. After Pedro Vite’s corner was flicked on by his teammate Kevin Rodriguez, Plata reacted quickly and poked the ball past Manuel Neuer to complete a stunning comeback.

The win saw Ecuador qualify for the knockout stage for only the second time in their history, following their Round of 16 appearance in 2006.

Despite the defeat, Germany still advanced to the knockout rounds for the first time in 12 years after their early qualification. Their last appearance in the knockout stage came during their victorious 2014 World Cup campaign.

Emotional scenes followed the final whistle as Ecuador players and staff broke down in tears after defeating one of football’s biggest nations. Fans at MetLife Stadium stayed back long after the match, singing and celebrating a historic qualification night.

Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic praised Ecuador’s performance, admitting they took advantage of their opportunities.

"I said it before the game - get one chance, you might get lucky and second chance is a miracle. To be honest, they got both lucky and miracle but that doesn't mean that the game was not good. They had a fantastic performance. They won the game. When you play for a win, you play differently. The players need to attack more, they risk more, it's a different gameplay. So, that's why they won the game. Big compliments for them." Zlatan Ibrahimovic said on Fox Sports.

The dramatic night also saw tensions rise between rival supporters. Clashes reportedly broke out between fans of Ecuador and Germany around the stadium.

The match also attracted plenty of attention off the pitch, with singer Sabrina Carpenter among the celebrities spotted watching the action from the stands.

Ivory Coast make history, Curacao’s fairytale ends

Ivory Coast continued their impressive World Cup campaign by defeating Curacao 2-0 and reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

The African side, who had never progressed beyond the group stage in their previous four World Cup appearances, confirmed a historic qualification behind a brilliant performance from Nicolas Pepe.

Pepe opened the scoring in the seventh minute after Yan Diomande won the ball and created the opportunity. The Villarreal forward added another goal in the 64th minute with a superb left-footed finish to seal the victory.

Curacao needed a win to become the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout stage, but their dream ended after a memorable debut campaign.

Despite the defeat, Curacao’s journey became one of the feel-good stories of the tournament. The Caribbean nation, with a population of around 1.5 lakh people, arrived at their first World Cup and earned admiration from fans around the world.

The Philadelphia stadium was packed with supporters from both teams, with thousands of Curacao fans travelling to witness their country compete on football’s biggest stage.

After the final whistle, Curacao players and goalkeeper Eloy Room received a warm reception from supporters.

Curacao supporters also created one of the most beautiful moments of the tournament as they stayed back to celebrate and show appreciation for Ivory Coast players after the final whistle.

Ivory Coast’s victory also continued their remarkable turnaround after defeating Ecuador in their opening game and recovering from their 7-1 loss against Germany.
