Cape Verde produced one of the greatest stories of the tournament in Houston as they became the smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage. The debutants held Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw to complete an unbeaten group stage run.

The African country had already stunned many by drawing 0-0 with Spain in their first group match and fighting back for a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Spain controlled large parts of the match but had to stay disciplined as Uruguay pushed for an equaliser. However, the South Americans failed to take their chances and ended the game without a win in the group stage.

Uruguay’s night ended in disappointment and frustration, with some players in tears after the final whistle. Meanwhile, their coach Marcelo Bielsa was seen getting frustrated, bursting out at reporters after the game.

2018 champions France continued their dominant run with a 4-1 win over Norway, powered by a sensational first-half hat-trick from Ousmane Dembele.
