Real Madrid slaps massive fines on Valverde, Tchouameni as Barcelona legend takes savage jab: 'Who won the fight?'

Real Madrid handed hefty fines to midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni after the two players engaged in a heated physical altercation during training that left the Uruguay star needing hospital treatment.

Both the players were penalised half a million euros as Madrid look to rescue the club from reputational damage amid a second straight trophyless season. Both Valverde and Tchouameni issued public apologies for their conduct even as the former claimed that "everything was blown out of proportion."

Madrid release statement

The incident is said to have occurred on Thursday morning at the Valdebebas training complex, just days before Sunday’s high-stakes El Clasico against Barcelona. Valverde reportedly confronted Tchouameni over alleged leaks to the press, leading to an altercation that escalated in the dressing room.

Real Madrid took note of the incident on Thursday and has now announced the penalty a day later.

"The players expressed their complete remorse for what happened and apologised to each other. Furthermore, they extended their apologies to the club, their team-mates, the coaching staff, and the fans, and both have made themselves available to Real Madrid to accept whatever sanction the club deems appropriate," the club said in a statement.

"Under these circumstances, Real Madrid has decided to impose a financial penalty of five hundred thousand euros on each player, thereby concluding the corresponding internal procedures," it added.

Pique's savage jab

While Real Madrid's struggles this season spill off the field, Barcelona legend Gerard Pique couldn’t resist taking a dig at his rivals. Responding to a comment from former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, Pique quipped: “And who do you think won the fight?”

The jab quickly went viral, with Blaugrana fans laughing their hearts out while Madrid supporters trying to troll him back.

The incident has already pushed Valverde out of the upcoming El Clasico which would be Los Blancos' last chance to take something out of another poor season.
