Mbappe shuns handshake with Paraguay goalkeeper after France's World Cup round of 16 Win

The France vs Paraguay 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 match was as heated as it could get when striker Kylian Mbappe and goalkeeper Orlando Gill were seen involved in a heated conversation on Sunday.

The Paraguayan players attempted to get physical with the French footballers throughout the play with rough tackles. But they kept their composure, with Mbappe scoring from the penalty spot in the 70th minute to help Les Blues secure a 1-0 victory at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Mbappe ignores Gill's handshake

After the final whistle blew, players gathered to shake hands in a customary gesture. But when Gill extended his hand towards Mbappe, he ignored his gesture and turned to his team and supporters to celebrate their win.

The Paraguay goalkeeper was not impressed with Mbappe's snub. With them already being disheartened after their loss, Gill threw the ball towards the French striker, hitting him on his back. But Mbappe did not react to it and chose to walk away.

Mbappe's solitary goal against Paraguay in the Round of 16 was enough to help France advance to the 2026 World Cup semifinals. The French captain struck his seventh goal in the tournament, taking his career total to 19 World Cup goals.

Orlando Gill: 'I lost my temper'

Following the match, Gill expressed his thoughts on throwing the match ball towards Mbappe after ignoring his handshake gesture. He revealed that he lost his temper, which led to the incident, but Gill calmed down soon after.

"I tried to shake his hand, but since he didn't pay me any attention, I lost my temper. But that was all I did. I calmed down afterwards," Gill said.

Following the 1-0 victory over Paraguay, France would face Morocco in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals on Friday, July 10, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. The match kicks off at 01:30 AM IST.
