Man United manager Carrick reminds Ratcliffe of club’s values as he denounces immigration comments: ‘We’re really proud…’

Manchester United interim manager and former player Michael Carrick ripped into co-owner Jim Ratcliffe on Friday over his controversial comment that the UK has been “colonised” by immigrants. Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim at Man United midway through the ongoing season, seemed reluctant at first to react to the disparaging remarks, but went on to underline the core values of the club that are the exact opposite of the views held by Sir Ratcliffe.

Carrick spoke honestly during the Friday press conference after he was asked to share his views on Ratcliffe’s comment, which has also been criticised by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

Carrick slams Ratcliffe for immigration comment

Carrick, who won five Premier League titles and one Champions League with Man United, started safely before changing tracks. "I think Sir Jim has made a statement and the club has made a statement. It’s not my place to add to that," Carrick said at first, before adding, “What I can say is I’ve been around this club for many years and we all make a huge impact globally, and we’re really responsible for that.

"As a player, a member of staff, and as a supporter, we’re really proud of the environment we have at the club. The diversity and equality is what we try to have throughout the club every day.”

He further added, "We have a really strong group. The players, the staff inside and out of the club. We always talking to each other. The boys have been in really good spirits. We have taken a deep breath, come back and focusing on what is next.

"We are here to help each other. Part of being at this club we understand what it is like globally. I can only speak from my personal experiences, all backgrounds and different backgrounds I am really proud of."

For the unversed, even Premier League giants Man United had condemned Ratcliffe’s comments in a statement. "Manchester United prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club," the club said. "Our diverse group of players, staff and global community of supporters, reflect the history and heritage of Manchester; a city that anyone can call home.”

Ratcliffe has since apologised for his comments, but reiterated that he was raising the immigration issue in the long-term interest of the UK.
