Lionel Messi attains historic World Cup record in thrilling World Cup knockout tie vs Cabo Verde

Lionel Messi proved why he is the greatest footballer in the modern era after showcasing his goalscoring masterclass against Cabo Verde in the 2026 World Cup knockout tie on Saturday in Miami. The Argentine footballer made history, becoming the first footballer to score in eight consecutive matches in the FIFA World Cup.

Argentina were put to the test against a spirited Cabo Verde in the Round of 32 clash, but Messi put La Albiceleste in the lead with a sublime opening goal in the 29th minute.

Messi began the goal-scoring streak in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when he scored against Australia in the round of 16. The Argentine footballer has been consistent, scoring at least one goal in every World Cup appearance since then.

The Argentine striker impressed with his footwork after receiving a pass from Lisandro Martinez. He found the gap against Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha to score his 20th career World Cup goal. He also made strides in the Golden Boot race, surpassing Kylian Mbappe to stand at the top of the list after scoring seven goals.

Messi also levelled a 64-year-old record of scoring in five consecutive World Cup knockout games, an achievement last achieved by Brazil's Vava in 1962. He also became the only player to make 30 FIFA World Cup appearances

Argentina advance to round of 16 after thrilling 3-2 win

Reigning world champions Argentina had a tough battle against Cabo Verde in Miami. After Messi scored in regulation time, Deroy Duarte netted a goal in the second half, levelling the score in the 59th minute. The game only got intense, with the viral goalkeeper Vozinha making crucial saves to put pressure on the defending champions.

Argentina once again broke through after Martinez scored at 92', but Sidny Lopes Cabral came in clutch to level the score at 103', keeping the knockout tie on the edge.

The defending champions finally went ahead after Christian Romero's header deflected off Cape Verde's Diney Borges in the 111th minute, crediting an own goal in favour of Argentina.

Argentina wrapped up the competition with a 3-2 win in extra time and has advanced to the round of 16.
