Real Madrid's embarrassing Mbappe injury management: Scan on wrong knee, three matches with mistaken diagnosis

World's biggest football club, Real Madrid, find themselves in an embarrassing position after a report claimed that the La Liga team's medical team performed an MRI scan on the wrong knee of superstar footballer Kylian Mbappe, forcing the French forward to play three more matches with an injury.

According to an explosive report in The Athletic, Real Madrid's medical team performed an MRI scan on Mbappe's right knee in December when he had suffered an injury in the left knee. The medical team naturally could not find anything suspicious and cleared the 27-year-old to play.

Real Madrid messed up Mbappe's knee injury?

Mbappe featured in three matches after the scan, worsening his left knee injury. The injury was caught only after a new scan was done, but by then Mbappe had already suffered a partial tear in the posterior ligament of his left knee.

Interestingly, Mbappe had been out of action for three-and-a-half weeks with a sprained left knee officially and only returned to the Real Madrid side in the second leg of the Round of 16 Champions League match against Manchester City on 18 March. This corroborates the inside story that Mbappe's knee injury was mismanaged by Real Madrid.

After the debacle at Real Madrid, Mbappe had a meeting with world-renowned consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet in Paris, who ruled out surgery. A 15-day muscular treatment was prescribed.

Mbappe, however, has hit out at the reports that an MRI scan was performed on the wrong knee. While he did not mention the MRI scan, the footballer stated that "false things" are being claimed in the media regarding his injury.

"My knee is fine. It's getting better," Mbappe said.

"It's going quite well, and I know there's been a lot of speculation about it and some false things have been said.

"It's the life of a top athlete, and we're used to people saying things without verifying them or having any basis in fact."
