ISL clubs warn AIFF of shutdown threat as uncertainty over league future continues: 'We are now compelled to...'

Several Indian Super League clubs have issued a strong warning to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) as uncertainty surrounding the future of the league continues to grow. In a joint statement released on Friday, multiple ISL clubs said they may reconsider their involvement in the league if there is no long-term clarity regarding Indian football’s structure and commercial future.

Among the clubs that shared the statement on social media were Kerala Blasters FC, Mumbai City FC, Bengaluru FC, Inter Kashi and Sporting Club Delhi.

“With deep concern and disappointment, the clubs of the Indian Super League wish to state that, given the continued uncertainty surrounding professional football in India, we are now compelled to review the extent of our commitment to the league beyond the current season,” the statement said.

The clubs also highlighted the financial difficulties caused by the uncertainty around the league’s future. They said many clubs have continued investing heavily in Indian football despite difficult situations, but the absence of structural and commercial clarity is making it harder for them to continue.

The statement comes just one day before the AIFF’s Special General Body Meeting, where the future commercial structure of the ISL is expected to be one of the biggest discussion points apart from seeking amendments in the constitution in line with the National Sports Governance Act.

ISL clubs push for new commercial model

The issue has been lingering since the expiry of the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and Football Sports Development Limited late last year. The disagreement over the MRA even delayed the 2025-26 ISL season, which eventually started in February and was reduced to a short 13-match format.

Several clubs reportedly faced financial and operational problems during the delay, including uncertainty over player contracts, salaries and planning for the future. Some clubs even threatened to shut down operations by next season if the conditions don't improve.

According to reports, AIFF has received a couple of offers for a new commercial model including a Rs 2000 crore proposal from Genius Sports. However, many ISL clubs are believed to be unhappy with the proposal and want the AIFF to go with the other proposal submitted by FanCode.

The FanCode proposal is reportedly for a much smaller amount and would allow ISL clubs a much larger role in running the league.
