Coming to the World Cup 2026, the United States co-hosts the quadrennial tournament with neighbours Mexico and Canada. The US had previously hosted the event for the first time in 1994, while Mexico had hosted the 1970 and 1986 editions and became the first nation to host the event thrice. Canada, meanwhile, will be making their debut as a World Cup host nation this summer.
The 23rd edition of the World Cup is set to be a historic affair. Not only is it the first edition to be hosted by three different nations, but it will also be the biggest World Cup ever, with the number of teams increasing to 48 from 32, which was the case from 1998 to 2032.
The expanded format has resulted in four teams making their World Cup debut this year – Cape Verde, Jordan, Uzbekistan and Curacao. Of the four debutants, Curacao holds the distinction of being the smallest nation ever to qualify for the event.
The tournament is also likely to be the last dance for legends such as Argentina's Messi, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, Brazil's Neymar and several others. Messi had fulfilled his lifelong dream of winning the World Cup after helping 'La Albiceleste' win the tournament in Qatar four years ago, while 40-year-old Ronaldo will be hoping to add the only major trophy that's missing from his cabinet this year.
