Divya Deshmukh storms into FIDE Women's World Cup semi-finals as India set new record in Batumi

Indian International Master Divya Deshmukh stormed into a historic semi-final at the FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 on Monday by beating compatriot Harika Dronavalli. After the classical games ended in a draw, the contest reached the tie-breaker, where Divya made a clean sweep over Harika.

The 19-year-old beat Harika with both white and black pieces in the tie-breaker to script history for India at Batumi. She made it to the semi-final in her debut appearance at the event.

Koneru Humpy made history on Sunday by beating Yuxin Song and thereby securing her spot in the top four. This is the first time two Indians have made it to the semi-final of the FIDE Women's World Cup.

Divya Deshmukh adds more history to India's campaign

Upon winning the tie, Deshmukh could not refrain from letting emotions get the better of her. She took a sigh of relief after getting the job done and the expressions on her face showcased how big a moment it was for her and India.

As for Harika, she vacated her seat immediately after congratulating her junior. It was another exceptional quarterfinal run for her, but unfortunately, it has come to a close. The veteran Indian is expected to brush aside this loss and bounce back stronger.

Semi-final picture clear

With the culmination of the quarter-final stage, the semi-final picture is crystal clear. It would be India vs China in the two semifinals. Koneru Humpy will take on Lei Tingjie and Divya Deshmukh will be up against the former women's world champion Tan Zhongyi. It will be a contest to look forward to.

Zhongyi was tested by R Vaishali in the second classical but the Chinese GM eventually found a way out to emerge victorious.

It should be noted that this tournament provides a direct pathway to the Candidates Tournament. The top-3 will make it to the Candidates, which is set to take place in April 2026. With two Indians in the semis, India are guaranteed of at least one Candidates spot.
