Indian chess star Arjun Erigaisi handed Esports World Cup lifeline as Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So withdraw

Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi secured a massive gain as America's Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So pulled out of the upcoming Esports World Cup 2026.

Veteran chess Grandmasters Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So had qualified for the Esports World Cup by finishing 15th and 16th in the Champions Chess Tour 2025-26 standings. But the duo was forced to pull out of the Esports World Cup due to the clash in scheduling with the Grand Chess Tour 2026. As a result, India's Arjun Erigaisi has fille done of the empty slots, while Alexey Sarana has received a higher seed.

Arjun Erigaisi to play at Esports World Cup 2026

The remaining three slots for the Esports World Cup will be filled through a Last Chance Qualifier in August.

While the chess event at the Esports World Cup will take place from 11 to 15 August, the Grand Chess Tour's Sinquefield Cup 2026 will be played from 8 to 21 August. Due to the clash, the American chess players have been forced to participate in the home tournament.

Some of the top Grandmasters, including Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana, Alireza Firouzja, Anish Giri, Vincent Keymer, Praggnanandhaa R and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave had earlier written a letter to Grand Chess Tour and Esports World Cup to avoid the schedule clash, but nothing came out of it.

Nonetheless, Arjun Erigaisi will now join fellow Indians Aravindh Chithambaram and Nihal Sarin, who have already qualified for the Esports World Cup 2026.

The Esports World Cup is an annual global gaming festival that brings together the world's best players across multiple titles. The chess event at the 2026 edition, scheduled to be held in Paris, will offer a prize fund of $1.5 million.

The Grand Chess Tour, meanwhile, is a prestigious annual circuit featuring some of the world's top grandmasters. The 2026 season carries a total prize pool of $2 million, spread across two Classical tournaments, three Rapid & Blitz events, and the season-ending Grand Finals.
