Thailand Open Highlights: Satwik-Chirag lose in straight games as Carnando-Marthin become champions

A poor start to the match cost Satwik-Chirag this final. They lost the first game 21-12 and then fought hard in the second game but still came up short, losing 25-23. A massive win for Carnando-Marthin who have defeated the Indian duo for the first time in their career.

Finally, the second game ends and with this point the match ends as well. Satwik-Chirag have lost the men’s doubles final of the Thailand Open 2026.  Carnando-Marthin are the Thailand Open champions.

Four times the Indonesians have gone up to the Championship points and every time the Indian duo has bounced back. It is 23-23 now.

The match just refuses to end. It is 22-22 now. Chirag Shetty pounces on this easy shot from his opponent on the net. It is a thrilling second game here in this final.

Whenever one of these pairs has looked like getting ahead of the game, the other has come back and in the end now we are at 18-18. Sat-Chi have the shuttle. Very close for both the sides.

Satwik misses a big chance. The shuttle was lobbed up for him to smash it into the ground of opponent but he just slams the net. It is 16-16 now.

Satwik shows calm under pressure to bring the Indians back on level terms. He sees a gap on the right court and just dabs the shuttle in the vacant area. It is now 14-14.

The Indonesians would not let Satwik-Chirag just run away with the lead. Carnando-Marthin have staged a comeback after the interval and they are now 13-12 up in the second game.

This game so far has gone well for Satwik-Chirag. They are not yet at their best but are still leading 11-9. Do not make much of that lead though, as the Indonesians are playing really well and can easily bounce back.

The organisers have their microphones in the crowd and we can hear a lot of Indian fans cheering now. Satwik-Chirag have been smarter in the second game but it is still close. The Indian duo is leading 9-8.

For the first time in this match, Satwik-Chirag have earned five points in a row and that means they go up 7-5 in this second game. Good comeback so far.

The Indonesian pair has flicked a switch and suddenly they are looking too strong for the Indian duo. The smashes have been immaculate early in this second game. Satwik-Chirag now trailing 5-2.

This has been the feature of the match for the Indian duo today. They have just not been able to win points consistently. And the second game starts in a similar fashion. They get the serve and win the first point before making a mistake and letting their opponents make it 1-1 without much fuss.

Poor start from the Indians. They have totally struggled to bring any consistency to this match. The best Sat-Chi could do in this match so far has been only two consecutive points. They need to turn things around if they want to make a comeback here.

Satwik-Chirag 12-21 Carnando-Marthin

Excellent review from Satwik-Chirag and they stop the Indonesian pair from going six points clear in the first game. It ws given ‘in’ on court but the review showed the shuttle to be completely outside the baseline. Indians still trail 11-14.

Satwik-Chirag are struggling for consistency here. They are now behind by five points. Carnando-Marthin leading 13-8 in this first game.

We go into the interval with Sat-Chi trailing by four points. It is 11-7 in favour of Carnando-Marthin. The Indian pair need to up its game just slightly as it has been really close so far.

Another good rally but this time it is Satwik who redeems himself for his earlier mistake. His superb smash goes unreturned into the opposition’s court. Sat-Chi still trailing 9-7.

An absolute cracker of a rally here. It did seem at one point that the Indian duo had the upper-hand but the Indonesians have done really well. Ultimately, it is Satwik who makes a mistake and the Indians are now 7-4 behind.

A poor serve from Chirag Shetty and now the Indonesian pair is 6-4 up in the first game. Good back and forth so far in this match.

Carnando-Marthin have started well and eked out a few mistakes from the Indian pair early on this match. The Indonesian pair is 4-1 up. Indian duo is not looking in much problem though. A comeback cannot be ruled out.

Huge cheer for the Indian pair as they are introduced. Umpire calls play and it is the Indonesian duo which will have the service to begin the match.

Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin are yet to drop a single game in this tournament. So, the Indian pair will not have it easy at all.

All four players are on the court. They are currently warming up for this final. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has some taping on his shoulder. Indian fans would hope it does not trouble him much.

China’s Bao Li Jing and Zi Han Cao are the women’s doubles champions of the 2026 Thailand Open. They have beaten Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanashi in a nail-biting encounter. The Chinese pair won 19-21, 21-16, 21-19.

Satwik-Chirag will take confidence from the fact that they won this tournament a couple of years back. At the same time, they played a key role for India in the recent Thomas Cup where the team clinched a bronze medal. Advantage is with the Indians in this clash.

“We are used to it now. There was a phase when we kept wondering why it was happening, but later I realised it is part and parcel of the game.

“The way we play is very attacking, so there will always be a few niggles. I have a history of tears and similar issues, so, I have to manage myself and keep playing.

“It’s about adjusting, staying calm, and supporting each other. Even when I’m not fully fit, my partner has always been supportive. Tan coach has also handled injured players very well, and that has made a big difference. I’m really happy,” Satwik said to BWF.

“It was tough technically as well as physically. The shuttles were not very fast today, so nobody got easy winners. Izzuddin was hitting really hard and we knew we had to be ready for those smashes,” Chirag said.

“I think especially in the second and third games, we defended very well. Whenever we got good lifts, we knew we had a chance to stay in the rally and defend. We also tried to move them around as much as possible, and that worked well for us.” Satwik said controlling the net was crucial against Malaysian and Indonesian pairs, who thrive in quick exchanges at the forecourt.

“There are always a lot of battles at the front court against these guys. Malaysians and Indonesians always want to dominate the net and stop us from playing from the backcourt,” he said.

“Whoever controls the net usually has the upper hand. That’s how they started the first game as well, controlling the front and middle court. Once you are forced to lift, the other pair has a much better chance of winning the rally.”
