It is also known by several other names, including Bengal quince, golden apple, stone apple, and wood apple.

The tree holds cultural and religious significance in India and is considered sacred by Hindus and Buddhists.

The fruit has a hard case outside and a yellowish-orange pulp inside with several seeds. As you crack it open, a sweet aroma spreads.

Over centuries, bael sharbat has eventually become a staple in Indian homes, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan.

In states like Bihar, bael sherbat is deeply connected to seasonal wisdom and traditional eating habits.

In Odisha, Bela Pana or Bael Juice is prepared using bael fruit pulp. It is used on the festive occasion of Maha Vishuva Sankranti, Odia new year.

For generations, families have consumed the drink during harsh summers to stay hydrated and maintain body balance.

Health experts describe bael as a fruit with cooling properties that may help reduce body heat during extreme weather conditions.

Health benefits of bel sherbet?

Apart from its refreshing taste, bael sherbat is widely appreciated for its health benefits. Experts often describe bel as a nutrient-rich fruit packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants that support overall wellness.

  • Improves digestion: One of the most well-known benefits of bael is its role in improving digestion. The fruit contains dietary fibre that helps regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation.

  • Protect the gut: It is also traditionally used to relieve indigestion, acidity, and stomach discomfort. Many people consume fresh bael juice on an empty stomach to soothe the digestive system.

  • Boosts immunity: Bael is also known to support immunity. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, the fruit may help the body fight infections and recover from seasonal illnesses.

  • Natural hydration: During summer, when dehydration and fatigue are common, bael sherbat offers both hydration and nourishment.

  • Helps manage diabetes: Another reason for the growing popularity of bael is its low glycemic index. Studies suggest that compounds found in bael may help improve insulin sensitivity, making it beneficial for people managing diabetes when consumed without added sugar.

  • Improves heart health: The fruit also contributes to heart health. Its potassium content helps regulate blood pressure, while fibre may support healthy cholesterol levels.

  • Reduces craving: Since bael is low in calories and high in fibre, it can also help promote fullness and reduce unhealthy cravings, making it suitable for balanced diets.

  • Removes toxins: Bael is equally valued for its natural detoxifying properties. It is believed to help flush toxins from the liver and kidneys while supporting metabolism.

  • Improves hair and skin health: The antioxidants present in the fruit may also benefit skin and hair health by reducing oxidative stress and promoting a healthy glow.

Perfect summer drink to beat the heat

One of the biggest reasons bael sherbat remains a summer favourite is its natural cooling effect on the body.

Its high water and fibre content, along with the presence of vitamin C, helps regulate body temperature and reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration during peak summer months.
