Artificial intelligence (AI) platforms like ChatGPT is rapidly reshaping healthcare, giving patients unprecedented access to medical information, symptom checkers, AI-powered health platforms, and online diagnostic tools.
Today, it is increasingly common for patients to search their symptoms online, upload blood reports, CT scans, MRI scans, X-rays or other imaging to AI platforms, and arrive at hospitals convinced they already know their diagnosis.
While this growing awareness has improved health literacy and encouraged people to take a more active interest in their wellbeing, healthcare experts caution that AI diagnosis, online medical advice and symptom checker apps have significant limitations.
They stress that technology should complement, rather than replace, qualified doctors, clinical examination and evidence-based medical decision-making.
On National Doctors' Day 2026, medical experts emphasise that the future of healthcare lies in combining the benefits of AI and the experience, judgement and empathy that only trained clinicians can provide.
AI-powered healthcare is changing patient behaviour
According to Dr Rajiv Jain, HOD and Consultant - Accident & Emergency, Gleneagles BGS Hospitals, Kengeri, Bengaluru, one of the biggest changes in clinical practice today is the growing number of patients relying on AI before consulting a doctor.
"One of the biggest changes we are witnessing in day-to-day clinical practice today is that patients often show up to us not only after searching their symptoms online, but also after they have uploaded their blood reports, scans, or other imaging to AI platforms and then arrive with a self-diagnosis already in mind."
He acknowledges that technology has made health information more accessible than ever before but believes it has also encouraged some patients to draw conclusions without understanding the complete medical picture.
"The tech has made health information easier to reach, yet it has also nudged some people into jumping to conclusions without really grasping the full clinical setting."
The hidden dangers of self-diagnosis and ChatGPT medical advice
Doctors warn that self-diagnosis based on AI-generated health information can sometimes lead to delayed treatment, unnecessary anxiety or even dangerous self-medication.
Sharing a recent case from the emergency department, Dr Jain highlights how online health information can become harmful when interpreted without medical supervision.
"We recently encountered a case that clearly highlights this concern. A teenager, anxious about missing an important examination because of a fever, searched online for ways to control his symptoms."
Believing that repeated doses of paracetamol would help him remain symptom-free, the teenager consumed nearly 12 tablets within just 12 hours without informing his parents.
"By the time he reached the hospital, the concern was no longer the fever itself, but the risk of paracetamol toxicity and potential liver injury. Fortunately, timely medical intervention helped prevent serious complications."
The incident serves as a reminder that even commonly available medicines can become dangerous when used without professional guidance. Experts say self-medication, medication overdose and inappropriate reliance on internet advice continue to be growing public health concerns.
ChatGPT lacks medical context and clinical judgement
Although AI tools can analyse blood reports, imaging studies and laboratory investigations within seconds, doctors point out that these systems cannot evaluate the complete clinical picture.
As Dr Jain explains "cases like these remind us that the challenge today is not just misinformation but information without context."
He adds that AI-generated interpretations have inherent limitations.
"AI tools may interpret a laboratory report or suggest possible conditions based on a scan, but they cannot assess a patient's medical history, examine the patient physically, recognise warning signs, or determine whether urgent medical attention is needed."
Clinical medicine depends on much more than test reports. Accurate diagnosis requires a detailed medical history, physical examination, understanding of risk factors, interpretation of investigations and the ability to recognise subtle warning signs that algorithms may overlook.
Better-informed patients are welcome - but online information has limits
Dr Anantha Padmanabha, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, believes the digital revolution has changed the doctor-patient relationship in many positive ways.
"Over the last few years, we have seen a significant shift in how patients approach consultations. These days, a lot of patients walk into hospitals and clinics after looking up their symptoms online or even using AI tools for health-related information."
Rather than viewing this trend negatively, he sees clear benefits.
"Honestly, in many ways, this is a positive change only. People are getting more aware of their health; they ask better questions, and they also seem to care more about preventive care."
Greater awareness, he says, often results in more meaningful conversations during consultations and encourages patients to participate actively in decisions about their health.
Why Google and AI cannot provide a final diagnosis
Despite the benefits of digital health tools, Dr Padmanabha cautions that internet searches should only serve as the beginning of the diagnostic journey.
"Online information should be viewed as a starting point, not a final diagnosis."
He explains that general health information cannot account for the many factors doctors evaluate while diagnosing illness.
"Medical information you find on the internet is often quite general and usually does not consider the person in front of you, such as their age, past medical issues, day-to-day lifestyle, or any existing health conditions."
As a result, physicians are increasingly seeing patients who arrive convinced they have a particular illness before any proper clinical evaluation has taken place.
"What we are increasingly seeing is patients coming with preconceived diagnoses and, at times, unrealistic expectations regarding treatment."
The growing challenge of health misinformation in India
The rapid spread of health-related information across social media, messaging applications and AI platforms has created new challenges for healthcare professionals.
Dr Padmanabha notes that misinformation can spread quickly in today's digital environment.
"In India, where health-related content is widely shared through social media and messaging platforms, misinformation can spread rapidly."
Although AI and digital platforms can improve health awareness, they cannot replace medical expertise.
"AI tools and other digital platforms can help people understand health better, but they cannot replace a careful clinical evaluation."
Clinical examination remains the foundation of diagnosis
Medical experts emphasise that diagnosis is a complex process requiring far more than matching symptoms with possible diseases.
As Dr Padmanabha explains "a proper diagnosis is not only about symptoms. It also depends on medical history, a physical examination, investigations and, importantly, clinical judgement, the kind that gets built over years of training and lived experience."
Clinical judgement enables doctors to identify serious illnesses early, distinguish between similar conditions, prioritise investigations and recommend treatments tailored to each patient's individual circumstances.
The future of healthcare: AI as a partner, not a replacement
Both experts agree that artificial intelligence will continue to play an increasingly important role in modern medicine. AI can improve patient education, increase access to reliable health information, assist with analysing investigations and support preventive healthcare.
However, neither believes technology can replace the human aspects of medicine.
Dr Jain says "as doctors, we encourage patients to read, ask questions, and actively participate in decisions about their health. Digital platforms and AI can certainly improve health literacy, but they cannot replace clinical examination, experience, empathy, and the nuanced judgement that comes from caring for a patient sitting in front of you."
He adds "on this Doctors' Day, it is important to remember that while technology can provide information, only a doctor can provide personalised and appropriate patient care."
Echoing the same sentiment, Dr Padmanabha concludes "the consultation room has certainly evolved, and informed patients are a welcome change. The ideal approach is for patients to use online resources to stay informed, while relying on qualified healthcare professionals for diagnosis and treatment decisions."
He believes the goal should be to strengthen, not weaken, the doctor-patient relationship.
"In the end, technology should strengthen the relationship between doctor and patient, not try to replace it. The responsibility of your health should shoulder on your doctor rather than depending on technology."
Striking the right balance between AI and medical expertise
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into healthcare, experts believe patients should embrace digital tools responsibly. Online symptom checkers, AI-powered medical platforms and health information websites can empower individuals with knowledge, but they should never substitute professional medical advice.
The consensus among clinicians is clear: artificial intelligence can assist with information, education and decision support, but accurate diagnosis, personalised treatment and compassionate patient care still depend on qualified doctors.
The future of healthcare lies not in choosing between AI and physicians, but in ensuring that technology enhances clinical practice while preserving the expertise, empathy and judgement that remain at the heart of medicine.
