When Christopher Nolan sets out to adapt Homer’s ancient Greek epic, he doesn't do things by halves. To lead his star-studded blockbuster as King Odysseus, Nolan handed Matt Damon a very specific directive- the legendary hero needed to look "lean and strong."

What followed was a drastic, high-performance transformation that saw the 55-year-old actor drop down to 167 pounds from 180 pounds, his lightest weight since high school.

The Secret Weapon: Cutting Out Gluten

As revealed during a podcast with Amy Poehler, Damon revealed that he accomplished his dramatic weight loss not through dangerous crash diets, but through a total lifestyle reboot. The biggest shift came when he completely eliminated gluten from his routine.

Speaking on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Damon admitted that giving up his favorite comfort foods was no easy task. "I'm a big fan of bread and beer, and pasta and pizza and all that stuff," he shared with Poehler. But the benefits far outweighed the sacrifice: "It's just a complete, complete lifestyle change... We didn't talk about it, and I didn't realize the level to which it was affecting me. It's completely changed my life these last couple years of not eating it."

The dietary discipline was so strict that while filming The Pizza Interview for The New York Times Cooking alongside co-star Tom Holland, Holland noticed Damon didn't eat a single slice of the pizzas they made. The results, however, spoke for themselves, Damon shed nearly 30 pounds from his usual 185–200 pound frame, and he has kept the gluten-free lifestyle permanently ever since.

The Physicality of a Nolan Epic

According to Vogue's report, cutting gluten was only half the battle. Embodying a weary, battle-tested warrior required an punishing workout plan built around functional endurance, core stability, and tactical strength to survive Nolan's famously gruelling sets.

The report mentions that Damon worked directly with physical therapist Dr. Gabe Stump, DPT, to prepare for the grueling 91-day shoot. Rather than building a bulky, modern "super soldier" body, the goal was a credible, functional frame.

Dr Stump revealed, "Odysseus is not this buff super soldier—he’s more of a tactician... He’s got this grizzly beard, and he looks really lean. You can see he’s still strong. He’s got good definition everywhere, but he’s not packed on."

In the five months leading up to filming, Damon moved from 180 pounds down to roughly 165 pounds using a straightforward, no-nonsense setup in his home basement:

-Traditional Upper/Lower Split: Four to five workouts per week. Mondays and Thursdays focused on upper body, Tuesdays and Fridays targeted legs, and Wednesdays were reserved for cardio or weighted-vest incline walks.

-Chest Emphasis: Because chest volume was slightly harder for Damon to build than shoulders or arms, Dr Stump targeted the area with horizontal bench presses, incline presses, and flies to hit the muscle from every angle.

-Progressive Overload & Recovery: Programming stuck to 8 to 10 sets per muscle group per week, prioritising consistency, progressive loading, and structured rest over trendy gimmicks.

A Permanent Transformation

While many actors revert to their usual habits as soon as the director yells "wrap," Damon says his Odyssey diet is here to stay. Between switching to gluten-free beer and feeling an unprecedented surge in daily energy, the actor credits Nolan's challenge with fundamentally improving his health well into his fifties.
