US envoy Sergio Gor arrives in Guwahati for Himanta Biswa Sarma’s swearing-in | Watch

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Guwahati on Tuesday morning to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led NDA government.

Upon his arrival at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Ambassador Gor was received by senior state officials. His visit coincides with a landmark political moment for the state, as Sarma becomes the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam to be sworn in for a second consecutive term.

The NDA swept the polls, winning 102 of the 126 seats in the House. The BJP secured 82 seats on its own, crossing the majority mark independently for the first time in the state, while alliance partners AGP and the Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each.

The ceremony, being held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field, will see a high-profile guest list including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Chief Ministers from across India.

Why this diplomatic stop matters

Importantly, the ambassador’s visit to Guwahati is far more than a ceremonial appearance. Under the Sarma administration, Assam has aggressively positioned itself as a hub for industrial investment and semiconductor manufacturing. These are the two sectors where US-India cooperation has deepened significantly in recent years.

Gor’s presence at the swearing-in is unusual for another reason. Traditionally, US ambassadors limit attendance at inaugural ceremonies to the Prime Minister’s swearing-in at Rashtrapati Bhavan, while state-level events are typically handled by regional consuls general.

Following the ceremony, the ambassador is expected to briefly engage with local leaders before departing.
