India scripted a historic chapter in its space journey on Saturday as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, making it the country's first privately developed rocket to reach orbit.
The Hyderabad-based startup declared Mission Aagaman a "grand success" after the four-stage launch vehicle successfully completed all mission phases during its maiden flight from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
Announcing the achievement, Skyroot said, "Hello Space! We have arrived." The mission marks the first time an Indian private company has successfully placed a rocket into orbit on its very first attempt, ushering in a new era for the country's commercial space sector.
The four-stage launch vehicle lifted off at 12:05 PM, carrying a mission that is expected to showcase the technological capabilities of India's private aerospace industry.
The launch comes as the country's space ecosystem undergoes a significant transformation following government reforms that opened the sector to private participation.
Mission Aagaman marks a new chapter
Mission Aagaman is Skyroot Aerospace's maiden orbital test flight and a landmark moment for India's private space industry. While the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has successfully carried out orbital launches for decades, Vikram-1 is the first orbital rocket designed and developed by an Indian private startup.
The mission is expected to demonstrate the growing capabilities of domestic private companies in developing launch vehicles and supporting commercial satellite launches. It also reflects the increasing role of Indian startups in advancing indigenous space technologies and expanding the country's presence in the global launch market.
Advanced indigenous technologies on display
Vikram-1 has been developed using several indigenous technologies. It is India's first orbital launch vehicle built with an all-carbon composite structure, making it lighter and stronger than conventional rocket-grade steel while improving overall performance.
The rocket's Orbital Adjustment Module is powered by a fully 3D-printed liquid engine, marking the first use of such an engine on an Indian orbital launch vehicle.
Vikram-1 also features the country's longest monolithic carbon composite first stage, highlighting advances in indigenous composite manufacturing and aerospace engineering.
Designed to provide rapid and on-demand launch services, the four-stage vehicle is expected to strengthen India's capabilities in the fast-growing small satellite launch market.
Mission carries tribute to India's scientific pioneers
Along with its technological objectives, Vikram-1 is carrying a symbolic payload that pays tribute to India's scientific legacy. The mission includes a miniature gold rocket containing micro sculptures of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India's space programme, Nobel laureate Sir C.V. Raman, and former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
The unique payload combines science, engineering and national heritage, making Mission Aagaman significant beyond its technological achievements. The launch is widely seen as a defining moment for India's private space industry and an important step towards expanding the country's commercial space capabilities.
