Neet-UG retest paper setters placed under lockdown ahead of June 21 exam

With the Neet-UG 2026 retest scheduled for June 21, authorities have implemented extensive security measures, including placing all personnel involved in preparing the examination paper under strict isolation at a secure undisclosed location. The restrictions, which will remain in place until the examination concludes, form part of a broader effort to safeguard the integrity of the medical entrance test after the controversy surrounding the cancelled May examination.

Authorities have tightened controls around the final stages of question paper preparation, placing those involved in setting, moderating and translating the Neet-UG retest paper under strict communication restrictions. Officials said access to external contacts has been significantly curtailed as part of efforts to safeguard the confidentiality of the examination process.

Officials familiar with the arrangements said individuals involved in confidential aspects of question paper development are being housed at a secure facility under close monitoring, according to TOI.

Mobile phones, laptops and other personal communication devices have been restricted, while internet access and contact with the outside world have been tightly controlled. Authorities have also imposed limits on the use of digital devices, including smartwatches.

Access to the facility is being monitored and documented, with entry restricted to authorised personnel.

First layer of a broader security framework

Officials said the isolation measures represent only the first stage of a wider examination security system introduced by the Ministry of Education and the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The Neet-UG retest is scheduled to be conducted in pen-and-paper mode from 2 pm to 5.15 pm across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad.

According to officials, every stage of the examination process is now subject to enhanced scrutiny, including question paper preparation, translation, moderation, printing, packaging, storage, transportation and distribution.

The entire process has also been compartmentalised to ensure that no individual or group has access to the complete operational chain.

Focus on secure transportation and digital monitoring

The movement of question papers has emerged as a major area of attention, with the government exploring the use of Indian Air Force aircraft for the secure transportation of examination materials across the country.

Authorities are also carrying out continuous surveillance of social media platforms, messaging applications and online forums to identify fake question papers, misinformation campaigns and any suspicious activity linked to the examination.

Measures follow paper leak controversy

The heightened security arrangements come in the wake of the paper leak controversy that led to the cancellation of the Neet-UG examination held in May and sparked concerns among more than 22 lakh candidates.

It is learnt that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has instructed officials to ensure that every vulnerability identified during the previous examination cycle is comprehensively addressed before the retest takes place.
