Khalistani terror threat puts Delhi, Uttarakhand on high alert; temples, railway stations under watch

Security has been tightened across Delhi and Uttarakhand after threat emails warning of a possible major terrorist attack prompted police and intelligence agencies to go on high alert.

According to a News18 report, the emails mention several temples, government offices and political leaders as potential targets, leading to an investigation into the threats.

According to the report, intelligence agencies have also issued a security alert covering areas from Uttarakhand to Delhi. The alert warns that Khalistani terrorists could attempt a major attack in the coming days, with religious places, government institutions, railway stations and police personnel identified as possible targets.

The heightened vigil comes against the backdrop of recent tensions between Nihang Sikh groups and the Uttarakhand Police following a violent incident in Chamoli earlier this month.

Intelligence agencies issue alert

The intelligence alert warns of possible attacks on temples in both Delhi and Uttarakhand, along with key government establishments and public infrastructure.

According to the report, Delhi Police, Uttarakhand Police and central intelligence agencies are coordinating efforts to assess the threat and strengthen security arrangements. Police personnel have been asked to remain vigilant, while security measures have been stepped up at important religious sites.

Officials are also investigating the origin of the threat emails to determine their authenticity and identify those responsible.

Tensions follow Chamoli incident

The latest alert comes days after a standoff between Nihang Sikhs and the Uttarakhand Police over the arrest of four Nihang pilgrims accused of attacking local residents in Chamoli district.

The dispute began on June 16 in Karnaprayag, where police said a verbal argument between Nihang pilgrims returning from the Hemkund Sahib Yatra and local traders escalated into violence. According to the police, four Nihang pilgrims allegedly attacked a trader and other residents with swords, leaving four people injured.

An FIR was registered, and the four accused were arrested and sent to judicial custody.

In the days that followed, members of the Nihang group occupied a gurdwara in Nagarasu, Rudraprayag, before leaving after holding meditation sessions. A larger group later marched to Dehradun demanding the release of the arrested Nihangs.

The standoff has since eased after mediation efforts and assurances from the Uttarakhand Police that allegations of bias in the investigation would be examined.

Security agencies on guard

This is not the first time intelligence agencies have warned of a possible Khalistani terror threat. Similar alerts were issued earlier this year, prompting enhanced security measures at important installations and religious places.

Key religious sites continue to remain under the radar of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, making security agencies particularly cautious.

Police and intelligence agencies are continuing their investigation while maintaining heightened surveillance across Delhi, Uttarakhand and other sensitive locations to prevent any possible security breach.
