From Assam to Tamil Nadu: As trade talks gather pace, US envoy Sergio Gor expands outreach beyond Delhi

While appointing Sergio Gor as his envoy to India, US President Donald Trump described him as a "great friend" to build on his narrative that a "good and true friend of India" sits in the White House. Since his what was seen as a delayed arrival in India in January this year, Gor has reached out to various segments of Indian leaders, from political to industry and business sectors.

On Monday, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai on Monday, where the two leaders discussed ways to deepen India-US cooperation across a range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and energy.

The meeting coincided with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's 52nd birthday, with Gor extending his greetings and highlighting the potential for stronger economic and strategic engagement between the two countries.

Sharing details of the interaction on X, the ambassador wrote, "Today, I called on @CMOTamilNadu C. Joseph Vijay to wish him a very Happy Birthday and to discuss the immense potential for deeper cooperation between our two nations across trade and investment, technology, supply chains, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and energy!"

Following his meeting with Vijay, Gor participated in celebrations marking 250 years of American independence. The US Embassy in Chennai hosted the commemorative event at a private hotel in the city, bringing together prominent personalities from various sectors across southern India and underscoring the growing people-to-people ties between India and the United States.

Describing the gathering as a "spectacular evening", Gor said the event reflected the strong and expanding engagement between the two countries.

The ambassador's visit to Chennai combined diplomatic outreach with commemorative events, focusing on expanding bilateral cooperation and reinforcing the broadening partnership between India and the United States.

The discussions in Chennai centred on expanding engagement in trade and investment, technology, supply chains, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and energy, areas that have increasingly shaped the India-US partnership.

Security cooperation discussed with Amit Shah

The US ambassador also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on June 18 and discussed strengthening cooperation between India and the United States in the security domain.

In a post on X, Shah said. "Met U.S. Ambassador to India, Mr. Sergio Gor in New Delhi today. Had a detailed discussion on further strengthening cooperation between India and the U.S. in the area of security, particularly in counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics. Under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, India is firmly committed to advancing the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and ensuring that the people of both nations benefit from the bilateral relationship."

Broader diplomatic engagement

In May, Gor met Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu in New Delhi and discussed areas of shared interest.

The ambassador later described the meeting as productive and said he looked forward to hosting visiting US Governors in the national capital in the coming months, signalling continued engagement at multiple levels.

Gor, earlier in May, also met Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari and reaffirmed Washington's commitment to strengthening the US-Rajasthan partnership with a focus on innovation and mutual growth.

Gor's outreach has also extended to India's northeastern region. Earlier in May, the ambassador travelled to Guwahati to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sharing details of the visit on X, Gor said, "Honored to have been invited to Guwahati today to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The United States and Assam have many commercial ties, and with the CM's leadership we will identify many more win-win scenarios for both of our nations!"

Gor's engagements in Tamil Nadu, Assam, Rajashtan and New Delhi form part of a broader diplomatic push by Washington to deepen its partnership with India through sustained high-level exchanges. Since assuming office earlier this year, the US ambassador has been involved in a series of engagements aimed at expanding cooperation in areas ranging from trade and technology to security and people-to-people ties.

The momentum was underlined during the May visit of US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah B Rogers, who travelled to India to advance cooperation in digital infrastructure, intellectual property, agricultural trade and research collaboration.

Emphasising the importance Washington attaches to the relationship, Gor said, "Visitors like Under Secretary Rogers are here because we care, because we want to work with India, we want to grow this partnership."

During the visit, Rogers described India as a vital partner, saying, "The United States is fortunate to have a partner like India with whom we can pursue secure, trusted research at the cutting edge of technology and pharmaceuticals, alongside mutually beneficial trade and talent exchanges."

Gor has also met jit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of India's Department of Atomic Energy, and congratulated him on the passage of the SHANTI Act, describing India as one of the United States' most consequential partners in shaping the future of global energy security.

Trade talks gather pace

As diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and Washington intensify, both countries are also moving closer to an interim trade agreement. The Ministry of External Affairs recently said India and the United States are in the final stages of concluding the pact after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, directed officials to expedite negotiations.

The momentum is expected to continue in the coming days, with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal set to hold talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New Delhi. The discussions are aimed at advancing the first phase of the proposed bilateral trade agreement as both sides work towards expanding economic cooperation.
