Defence ministry clears landmark 250 MW solar project in Uttar Pradesha

A major renewable energy project is set to take shape in Uttar Pradesh after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the establishment of a 250 MW solar power project with a battery energy storage system (BESS) at Sitapur (ex-cantonment). The project will be developed on approximately 850 acres of vacant defence land and is being described as the first initiative of its kind undertaken by the Ministry of Defence.

The approval marks a significant step towards expanding clean energy generation while making productive use of unused defence land assets.

First solar-plus-storage project on defence land

The project will combine large-scale solar power generation with integrated battery storage support, creating a renewable energy facility designed to strengthen long-term energy security for defence establishments.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the initiative reflects the government's focus on sustainability, renewable energy adoption and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

The project is also expected to lower expenditure on grid power procurement for defence facilities, resulting in long-term savings for the government.

NTPC to oversee implementation

NTPC Limited has been entrusted with implementing the project through a competitive bidding process aimed at securing optimal energy pricing and maximising savings.

The execution of the project will be carried out in coordination with the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) and the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE).

Officials said the initiative brings together national security objectives, energy security requirements, technological advancement and environmental sustainability.

Coordination planned for timely execution

The Ministry of Defence, NTPC, IHQ of MoD (Army) and DGDE will work jointly to ensure the project is completed on schedule.

Once operational, the Sitapur Solar Power Project is expected to become one of the country's most significant renewable energy installations developed on defence land.

Officials believe the project could serve as a model for future solar-plus-storage initiatives across the defence sector.

By combining renewable energy generation with battery storage infrastructure, the facility is expected to demonstrate how defence assets can be utilised to support broader national goals while maintaining strategic interests and operational requirements.
