AI can ease doctor burnout, but human judgement remains central to healthcare: Experts
As doctors face rising workloads, experts say AI and surgical robotics could reduce fatigue and administrative pressure — but human judgement and empathy will remain irreplaceable

The growing complexity of healthcare delivery, rising patient volumes and increasing administrative responsibilities have placed doctors under mounting pressure globally. The World Health Organisation recognises burnout as an occupational phenomenon linked to chronic workplace stress, marked by emotional exhaustion, detachment and reduced professional effectiveness.
In India too, healthcare professionals are increasingly facing challenges arising from long working hours, documentation responsibilities and expanding clinical demands. Experts believe that while technology cannot replace the human role in medicine, the intelligent use of artificial intelligence (AI), automation and digital systems can help reduce unnecessary workload and allow doctors to focus more on patient care.
Dr. Anil Gomber, Senior Director – Internal Medicine & Diabetologist, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital (New Delhi) said AI is transforming healthcare through improved diagnostics, streamlined workflows and faster evidence-based decision-making.
However, he emphasised that AI should be viewed as a powerful support tool rather than a substitute for doctors.
“AI is changing the face of healthcare through better diagnostics, optimisation of work processes, and quick evidence-based decisions made in the clinic. Yet, AI needs to be seen only as an extremely efficient tool, not as a replacement of doctors,” Dr. Gomber said.
He added that medicine involves understanding patient emotions, individual circumstances and ethical considerations — areas where human judgement and empathy remain essential.
Robotics aims to reduce physical and cognitive burden on surgeons
Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder, Chairman and CEO, SS Innovations International, said physician burnout is not merely an individual concern but a challenge linked to the broader healthcare system.
He said that as surgical procedures become more complex and patient demand continues to increase, healthcare systems need to explore technologies that improve outcomes while also supporting surgeon well-being.
According to Dr. Srivastava, this approach guided the development of the SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System, which was designed with a focus on surgeon ergonomics, efficiency and clinical performance.

He added that specialised instruments developed for areas such as cardiac and paediatric surgery help surgeons access challenging anatomical regions with greater efficiency.
“By making surgery more precise and technically efficient, these innovations help surgeons maintain consistent performance throughout long and demanding procedures, ultimately contributing to improved clinical outcomes and enhanced patient safety,” he said.
AI can support doctors, but cannot replace clinical judgement
Experts said the next phase of healthcare transformation will involve deeper integration of AI across clinical workflows, including patient data management, surgical planning, image analysis, documentation and post-operative reporting.
Dr. Srivastava said AI could reduce repetitive and time-consuming tasks, allowing surgeons to dedicate more attention to complex decision-making and patient care.

While AI can assist clinicians, he said physical examination remains crucial for understanding disease conditions and assessing patient psychology.
Dr. Gomber added that reducing burnout requires more than technology adoption. It also needs proper workforce planning, supportive hospital policies, mental health initiatives and a balanced working environment for doctors.
The experts stressed that the future of healthcare lies in collaboration between medical professionals and intelligent technologies — where AI reduces routine burdens while doctors continue to provide empathy, judgement and personalised care.
