'Rubbish': Dharmesh Darshan refutes Mahesh Bhatt’s claims of him being illegitimate

Filmmaker Dharmesh Darshan is the son of Mahesh Bhatt’s real sister. Earlier, the director’s uncle Mahesh Bhatt claimed that he was the illegitimate child of Nanabhai Bhatt.However, recently, in an interview, the Dhadkan director refuted these claims saying that Bhatt should have been more responsible and avoided this comment as it could have worsened his parents’ mental health. Mahesh Bhatt, his brother Mukesh, and Sheila were born to Nanabhai Bhatt and Shirin Mohammed Ali.During an interview with Lehren Retro, Darshan was asked about his uncle’s claims made on his mother. Responding to the same, he said, “It’s rubbish… there’s very little truth to it. Every truth can be distorted. Mahesh mama is my saga mama (real uncle), and my mother was obsessed with him. In 1939, my grandmother and my grandfather got married. The Hindu Marriage Act came in 1959, and by then my mother also was married. I didn’t even know my grandmother’s name was Shirin until Mahesh mama said it was an issue.”Clearing the air around the rumours that his grandfather, Nanabhai Bhatt, had another family and used to live somewhere else, Dharmesh revealed, “I had an extraordinary other grandmother. They were both legitimate, because I saw both of them… My grandmother had six children and the other grandmother had three children,” adding that his grandmother, Shirin followed Gujarati-Hindu traditions. He further added that he used to call Shirin her ‘mumma’, not ‘amma’, and that his grandfather was a ‘great man’ who was ‘flogged’ in public without any reason.The Aap Ki Khatir director went on to say that Bhatt should have given another thought before making such irresponsible comments and his statements could have triggered his parents’ illness. He further said that he and Mahesh Bhatt had a debate over the same but in a ‘cultured’ way.Darshan also spoke about the medical condition of his parents and said, “My mother got Parkinson’s because she got so worked up and didn’t know what to do.
