India’s flagship digital payments platform, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), recorded a historic milestone in FY26, processing 24,162 crore transactions worth Rs 314 lakh crore, according to a government release.

The data underscores the rapid expansion of digital payments across India, with UPI increasingly becoming the backbone of everyday financial transactions in urban, semi-urban, and rural regions alike. The growth has been driven by ease of use, seamless interoperability, rising smartphone penetration, and expanding digital infrastructure.

The government noted that UPI has emerged as a key pillar of India’s digital economy, playing a crucial role in advancing financial inclusion by integrating individuals, small businesses, and micro-entrepreneurs into the formal financial system.

The strong FY26 performance builds on sustained momentum in recent years, aided by increasing merchant acceptance and policy initiatives promoting cashless transactions.

“Digital payments are no longer just about growth; they have become a natural part of everyday life,” Bajaj said, highlighting rising adoption in rural and semi-urban markets where users and small businesses now rely heavily on digital transactions.
