With Russian help, Egypt begins construction of first nuclear power plant at El Dabaa

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi announced Tuesday a significant step forward in relations with Russia, calling it as "a new brilliant page." The announcement came during the foundation laying ceremony for Egypt's inaugural nuclear plant, the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, a collaborative effort with Russia's state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom.El-Sissi emphasised the project's role in addressing global energy challenges and supply chain disruptions. He highlighted the potential of the El Dabaa plant to provide secure, cost-effective, and sustainable energy, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating price fluctuations.Russian President Vladimir Putin, via video-link, reiterated his nation's commitment to modern industries and bilateral cooperation. Putin characterised the project as a flagship endeavor in the longstanding partnership between Russia and Egypt, aiming to foster modern industries, create skilled jobs, and address social issues.Putin underscored the continuous communication between himself and President el-Sissi, acknowledging joint efforts to address the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. In a broader context, he outlined collaborations such as the development of a Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal area.The leaders also discussed Egypt's aspiration to become a full member of BRICS, an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Putin expressed Russia's support for Egypt's inclusion in this influential group.Furthermore, El-Sissi emphasised the foundation laying ceremony as a pivotal moment in the close cooperation between Egypt and the Russian Federation, marking a significant stride in their diplomatic ties.
