Turkish comedian Deniz Goktas was arrested at Istanbul Airport on Thursday after returning from a trip abroad, over a stand-up performance that prosecutors allege contained remarks insulting Islam. The arrest comes amid an expanding crackdown on critics of Turkey's Islamo-conservative government, with artists, journalists, musicians and opposition figures increasingly facing legal action.

Prosecutors cite complaints over comedy show

In a statement, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said Goktas was detained on July 2 as part of an investigation into the charge of "publicly insulting religious values".

The prosecutors said they had received 185 complaints about the comedian's performance.

The case centres on a stand-up show performed in Istanbul on June 1, which was uploaded to YouTube on June 24. The 90-minute video has since attracted nearly nine million views.

Show included political satire

During the performance, Goktas used satire to comment on political developments in Turkey, including references to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, whose arrest last year triggered mass anti-government protests.

Days after the video was published, prosecutors launched an investigation, alleging that the show contained "offensive statements that constituted a criminal offence".

At the time, Goktas said on X that he was on holiday abroad. He was detained immediately upon his return to Turkey on Thursday. According to Turkish media, he is expected to appear before a court on Friday.

Who is Deniz Goktas?

The 32-year-old comedian, originally from Ankara, began his stand-up career in 2019 at Istanbul's TuzBiber comedy club.

Since then, Goktas has performed across Turkey as well as in several cities in Europe and the United States, building a large following through live performances and online content.
