Watch | ‘We had 111 missiles shot by Islamic Republic of Japan’: Trump on West Asia conflict

In his latest break with reality, US President Donald Trump claimed that the "Islamic Republic of Japan" launched 111 missiles at an American warship during the ongoing West Asia conflict.

In rambling remarks during a joint media appearance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump launched into a tirade about the US-Iran war and said that Japan had fired 111 missiles at the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is currently deployed in the Arabian Sea.

"We have an aircraft carrier which is one of the most beautiful in the world. That's one of the biggest — the Abraham Lincoln. And two months ago, we had a —I told the story yesterday— we had 111 missiles shot by the Islamic Republic of Japan. They were shot at the aircraft carrier over a period of about one hour. Hundred-and-eleven missiles going to a very expensive ship and every one of those missiles was knocked down," Trump said.

For context, Japan is located more than 12,000 kilometres from Iran where the United States is currently engaged in the war. Trump apparently meant to say the Islamic Republic of Iran, the formal name of the country with which it is locked in a war in West Asia.

No one present at the scene pointed out that Japan is neither an Islamic nation nor a participant in the ongoing war in West Asia.

Trump has a long history of mixing up the names of people and places. He is also well-known to have a poor grasp of geography.

Trump has previously claimed that he had resolved a war between Albania and Azerbaijan. The conflict was actually fought between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He has also claimed to have resolved the Armenia-Cambodia war despite the fact that the two countries have never been at war and are located more than 4,000 km apart. Trump, in fact, tried to play the peacemaker in Cambodia's war with Thailand.
