A video of the moment Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif got to know that the Iranian delegates were staging a walkout went viral online, reflecting the diplomatic undercurrents that were in play at that moment in Switzerland. Things went downhill after US President Donald Trump's threat disrupted the US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland, prompting the Iranian team to stage a brief walkout.

In the video, Sharif was seen greeting Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi with a hug, clearly expecting things to go well. However, the Iranian diplomat declined a photo-op or opening speeches and left the room with his team.

Visibly shocked, the Pakistani premier then sent the country's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi with the Iranian team as he discussed the matter with another key player, Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir.

In the same video, US Vice President JD Vance was seen watching the whole thing play out. Munir and Sharif were later seen briefing him about the situation in an apologetic manner. Looking at the video, several political analysts pointed out that it reflected months of Pakistan's efforts to bring the two sides to the negotiating table, undone by just one threat from Trump.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance was left embarrassed after the Qatari minister refused to greet him during a photo-op.

What went down in Switzerland

On late Sunday, Iranian delegates staged a walkout in protest at a stream of threats issued by Donald Trump on social media. The American leader threatened to bomb Iran and even kidnap the Iranian negotiating team unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened.

This forced both the Pakistani and the Qatari teams to continue negotiations in the background. The Iranian delegation met Qatari mediators and then left the negotiating site, the Iranian state media reported.

Interestingly, right before walking out, Iran reached a draft agreement on how the US will issue a waiver lifting sanctions on Iranian oil exports, one of the key preconditions for Iran to open talks on its nuclear file. According to The Guardian, Iranian officials claimed that the waivers would be issued soon, adding that progress had also been made on unfreezing Iranian assets in overseas bank accounts.

Despite all this, Iran was seen fuming at these threats. Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said: “Don’t they think to themselves that if their threats had any effect, they wouldn’t have reached the desperation they face today? We don’t take the Americans’ threats into account at all.”

Talks continue throught the night

Despite the roadblocks, an American diplomat eventually told reporters that the United States expects talks with Iran to continue through the night in Switzerland, AFP reported.

A US diplomat at the Swiss venue told reporters the Iranian delegation was involved in "robust discussions on all elements of the nuclear deal", and gave clarifications on Iran's messaging "on the Strait and building deconfliction mechanisms to ensure the Strait will remain fully open." Overall, it will be interesting to see the outcome of the highly anticipated negotiation process.
