In a shocking incident at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas on Wednesday morning, Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus was assaulted by defendant Deobra Delone Redden during a felony battery case. The violent episode, captured on courtroom video, unfolded as Redden leaped over a defense table and the judge's bench, landing on Judge Holthus, leading to a chaotic brawl involving court officials, attorneys, and even courtroom staff. Despite the intense attack, Judge Holthus sustained injuries but was not hospitalised. A courtroom marshal who came to her aid suffered injuries, including a bleeding gash on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder, requiring hospitalization.Redden, 30, was apprehended and taken to the Clark County Detention Center. Records indicate he now faces multiple new felony charges, including battery on a protected person, referring to the judge and court officers.The courtroom chaos erupted during Redden's sentencing for a case stemming from an arrest last year, where he was accused of attacking someone with a baseball bat. Despite wearing a white shirt and dark pants and pleading for leniency, Redden became agitated as the judge signaled her intention to imprison him. He yelled expletives, charging forward as the court marshal moved to handcuff him.Redden had previously pleaded guilty in November to a reduced charge of attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm. Records show he was found mentally competent to stand trial. Having served prison time in Nevada on a domestic battery conviction, Redden's history underscores the seriousness of the incident.Judge Holthus, a career prosecutor with over 27 years of courthouse experience, was elected to the state court bench in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. In response to the incident, court spokesperson Mary Ann Price stated that officials are reviewing all protocols to ensure the safety of the judiciary, the public, and court employees.
