Trump’s disapproval rating rises to new high as Iran war drags on, finds survey

President Donald Trump’s disapproval rating has risen to a new high of 62 per cent as the United States grapples with a spiralling cost-of-living crisis, according to a survey by ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos.

Even as Trump has claimed that he has “won” the issue of affordability and said inflation would not last long, Americans do not appear to believe him, rejecting him on nearly every metric.

Despite Trump doubling down on the war on Iran, 66 per cent of Americans said they disapproved of his handling of the conflict.

Since Trump launched the war, analysts have said that the war-induced economic crisis has worsened Trump’s standing — and the survey’s findings reflect that.

The survey found that 72 per cent of Americans disapproved of how Trump is handling inflation — a seven-point increase over the past two months. Similarly, 76 per cent of Americans disapproved of how Trump is handling the cost-of-living crisis.

Since Trump launched the war on Iran, average petrol prices at pumps have surged by 46 per cent to $4.4 a gallon — the highest level in four years.

This is the latest survey to highlight Trump’s slipping hold on the American electorate. Ahead of the mid-term elections, declining ratings have rattled Trump and Republicans, who fear they could lose one or both chambers of Congress — a setback that would almost surely derail the presidency’s agenda.

Overall, Trump’s disapproval stands at 58 per cent, according to the New York Times poll of polls.

To be sure, Trump’s ratings were low even before he launched the war on Iran, and he had warned Republican lawmakers that he would be impeached if they lost the mid-term elections. Across all surveys, Democrats have an edge in the mid-term elections.

In state-level contests since Trump assumed office, Democrats have flipped at least 28 Republican-held seats, while Republicans have not flipped any. Democrats have also won gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as the mayoral election in New York City.
