Times Square shooting: Gunfire breaks out at New York's iconic tourist hub; one injured, juvenile suspect held

A shooting in New York City's Times Square caused panic among crowds on Thursday afternoon, as gunfire rang out in one of the city's busiest tourist areas.

The incident happened at around 3:40 pm local time. Videos from the scene appeared to show at least two people opening fire in a crowded intersection near a parked NYPD vehicle. Tourists, locals and visitors quickly ran for cover as the shots were fired.

The shooting took place just hours after New York City deployed thousands of police officers for the New York Knicks' championship parade. The area was also packed with international visitors and sports fans.

The New York Fire Department said one person was injured and taken to a hospital. Officials have not yet released details about the victim's condition.

Police officers chased the suspects shortly after the shooting. The NYPD said one juvenile suspect was arrested and a firearm was recovered.

The area was later sealed off as investigators examined the scene. Police are continuing to investigate the motive and are working to determine whether any other suspects were involved.
