Singapore: Indian-origin man being probed for role in Syria violence

Singapore: A Singaporean national of Indian-origin is being investigated for allegedly going to Syria "with the intention to undertake violence" in the ongoing armed conflict there. Haja Fakkurudeen Usman Ali (37), who took Singaporen citizenship in 2008, left the country last November on an alleged trip to fight against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the Ministry of Home Affairs said here yesterday.[caption id="attachment_1446391" align="alignleft" width="380"] Syria rebels. Representational image. Agencies.[/caption]A member of the public had informed the authorities of the alleged trip made by Haja, after he had already left the Singapore. He worked as a supermarket manager here, according to a report by The Sunday Times today.The ministry has also investigated and deported another Indian national, Gul Mohamed Maracachi Maraicar, for having helped to radicalize Haja and assisted him in his plans to participate in armed violence in Syria.Gul, 37, was a Singapore permanent resident and has worked as a system analyst here. The ministry has not revealed the time of investigation and deportation of Gul when asked by the newspaper.PTI
