Japan: Nuclear reactors to be reactivated after 4 years

Tokyo: The governor of Japan's Kagoshima prefecture on Friday approved the reactivation of two nuclear reactors at the Sendai plant.Sendai was the first plant in Japan where new regulations were imposed by Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) after the accident at the Fukushima plant triggered by an earthquake and tsunami 11 March 2011.[caption id="attachment_1792631" align="alignleft" width="380" class=" "] Representational Image. Reuters[/caption]The plant is expected to start its commercial activities from 2015 after the NRA completes its last security reviews in Sendai. The approval granted on Friday is almost the final step for the reactivation of the power stations, whose 48 commercial use reactors are currently non-functional until they adopt the NRA norms.The Fukushima accident was the worst since the Chernobyl meltdown in Ukraine in 1986. Some 300,000 people had evacuated the area to avoid the after effects of the accident.IANS
