Iran's Araghchi, top officials break down during the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's funeral: Video

Iran's Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf were seen inconsolable as they broke down in tears during the funeral ceremony for the country's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Friday.

The video of the two Iranian diplomats mourning the loss of the country's supreme leader started to circulate online as the Islamic Republic began week-long state funeral ceremonies months after he died in a US-Israeli strike on February 28, which triggered a months-long mourning period in the country.

The visuals from the funeral were released by Iran's Fars News Agency, which captured the emotional scenes, with the country's top leadership paying tribute to Khamenei. The former Iranian supreme leader's burial was postponed because of the war and subsequent security concerns.

Top Iranian leadership in tears

A video from the ceremony shows Araghchi and Ghalibaf standing before Khamenei's coffin, visibly sobbing as prayers are offered inside Tehran's Grand Mosalla. Both leaders were seen wiping tears while other senior officials bowed their heads in mourning.

Thousands of mourners gathered in the Iranian capital, all dressed in black to mourn the loss of the country's supreme leader. Outside the venue, slogans were heard as people wept. Some of them were even spotted beating in keeping with Shiite mourning traditions.

Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly 37 years, was killed alongside several members of his family, including his daughter, son-in-law, infant granddaughter and daughter-in-law, right at the start of the US-Israel war on Iran on February 28.

It is pertinent to note that under the Islamic tradition, burials are generally conducted within 24 hours of death. However, the Iranian authorities delayed the funeral because of the ongoing conflict along with heightened security risks. Hence, they scheduled the funeral only after the United States and Iran reached a truce last month.

Hence, the body of the late Supreme Leader is lying in state at Tehran's Grand Mosalla before a series of funeral processions across Iran and Iraq.
