Iran closes Strait of Hormuz 'until further notice' after vessel intercepted, IRGC says

Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed "until further notice" after forces fired warning shots at a vessel they said was travelling on an "unauthorised route". According to state media, the ship was intercepted and stopped following the incident.

The vessel was "hit by warning shots and stopped", the Guards said, according to the official news agency IRNA.

"Following this incident, firstly, due to the emergence of this insecurity due to illegal intervention by foreigners, the Strait of Hormuz will be closed until further notice and until the end of American interventions in this region and no vessels will be allowed to pass through," they added.

Tensions with US continue to escalate

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Saturday vowed revenge over the US-Israeli killing of his father and predecessor, hours after US President Donald Trump warned of severe reprisals if there was any attempt on his life. The exchange of sharp warnings came as tensions continued to rise despite diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating further.

The latest remarks followed renewed exchanges of fire this week that shook an interim agreement aimed at ending the West Asia war, which began in late February with large-scale US-Israeli strikes that killed former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

While Trump declared the ceasefire over, he also said the door remained open for negotiations. At the same time, mediators continued efforts to revive diplomacy, with Iranian media reporting that a delegation from Qatar travelled to Iran on Friday.

"Vengeance is the will of our nation and must inevitably be carried out," new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei said in a written message.

"This matter depends neither on my personal existence nor on that of other officials. Whether we are present or not, it will come to pass," he wrote in his first message since his father's funeral this week.
