Hamas commander working as Gaza hospital doctor killed in Israeli strike, says IDF

A Hamas commander who also worked as a doctor at a hospital in central Gaza was killed in an Israeli strike over the weekend, according to a Times of Israel report, citing the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

The military said the strike, carried out on Saturday, killed Jamal Abu Aoun, whom it identified as a platoon commander in Hamas's military wing and a doctor at Yafa Hospital in Deir al-Balah.

"IDF forces under Southern Command conducted a targeted strike two days ago in the center of the Gaza Strip, eliminating the terrorist Jamal Abu Aoun, a squad commander in the military wing of the terror organisation Hamas, who simultaneously operated as a doctor at Yafa Hospital in Deir al-Balah," the IDF wrote in a post on X.

The Israeli military also said the Hamas commander was involved in planning and advancing “terror plots” against IDF forces and Israel.

The military further alleged that he had recently participated in efforts to rebuild and rearm Hamas's military capabilities, which it said violated the terms of the ceasefire agreement.

Hamas has not immediately commented on the IDF's claims.
