6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan, tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

Earthquake of 6.1 magnitude hit Afghanistan around 2:50 pm on Thursday (11 January).  Tremors were felt in India and Pakistan.According to the National Center for Seismology, the nodal agency of the Government of India for the monitoring of earthquake activity, the earthquake tremors had its epicenter in Afghanistan.Afghanistan was rattled twice by quakes of Magnitude 6 and above since October 2023.There were no immediate reports of any loss of life, or damage to property due to the earthquake.Earthquake in DelhiDelhi and its surrounding areas experienced earthquake tremors on Thursday afternoon.The National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram, also felt the earthquake tremors.The quake triggered panic among people, with many in Delhi and NCR reporting shaking of furniture.Earthquake tremors felt in Jammu and KashmirThe tremors were also felt in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir and in the South of the Pir Panchal region.Earthquake in PakistanAccording to Pakistan meteorological department, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake jolted parts of the country on Thursday afternoon.The epicenter of the quake was in Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said in a post on X (previously known as Twitter).The 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck at 2:20 pm (local time) in the Hindu Kush region at a depth of 213 kms.More details are awaited
